The information below relates to our old app. If you are still using our old app, you can update to the new app now.

What is Selfie Check?

Selfie Check uses facial biometrics to verify your identity via the AIB Mobile app. We use the latest technology to recognise the things that make your face unique, so we know it’s you in control of your money. 

Selfie Check allows you to make once off payments up to €10,000 on the AIB Mobile App. If you use AIB Internet Banking, please hang onto your AIB Card Reader.

Once you’re enrolled, you can make payments up to €10,000 using Selfie Check.

Enrolling for Selfie Check

To enrol, you’ll need to take a photo of yourself that will be safely stored on the AIB database. It will only be used by us to make sure it’s you making your payments on the AIB Mobile App.

Open the app and tap 'Settings'
Tap ‘Security and access’ from the menu
Tap ‘Selfie Check’ and ‘Enrol’
Follow the on-screen instructions to enrol for Selfie Check

The facial biometrics we collect will be stored by AIB and only be used to make sure it’s you on the AIB Mobile App. 

Using Selfie Check

When we ask you to use Selfie Check while making payments we’re checking that it’s really you. The process is simple:

You’ll be asked to present your face to the camera 
We compare your face to the Selfie pic that you took when you enrolled
If your face matches then you can make your payment

How to enrol for Selfie Check.

Log in to the AIB mobile app.

Tap Settings, Security and Access, and then Selfie Check.

This should show a “Not Enrolled” status in red.

If it doesn’t, please check back in a day or two to see if you’re eligible.

On the next screen, tap Enrol Now.

Please read the Data Protection notice, and if you’re happy to proceed, tap Next.

Read the short explanation of what you need to do and tap Next.

Tap ‘Allow’ once to share your location.

Position your face within the black outline to take your selfie.

Once the outline turns green, tap Take Photo.

If you’re happy that your face is clear and visible, tap ‘Yes, use photo.’
If not, tap ‘Retake Photo.’

And that's it. You are now enrolled and can make payments up to €10,000 on your mobile app.

How to make a payment once you’ve enrolled for Selfie Check?

Log in to the AIB Mobile app, tap Pay and Transfer, then Pay an Irish Account.

Tap the account you want to pay from.

Tap Pay Someone New.

Enter the payee's name and IBAN, then tap Continue.

Enter the amount you want to pay, and add statement messages for reference, if you need.

Tap Continue. Check the details are correct.
Then tap ‘Make Payment’.

Follow the instructions on-screen to take your selfie and confirm your identity.

Payment will be processed the same day if the payee holds an AIB account.

If the payment is made to another financial institution before 2 p.m., it will be processed the same business day.
If it’s made after 2.00 p.m., it will credit the payee’s account the following business day.

Tap ‘View Accounts’ to go back home or ‘Payment Logs’ to see recent payments.

Make a payment using Selfie Check

Questions about Selfie Check

There are a few steps you can take to help you enrol for Selfie Check:
- Ensure that you have enabled location services, this can be updated in your phone settings
- As Selfie Check uses facial biometrics to verify it's you, you must enable your camera permissions. This can be updated in your phone settings
- Choose a well lit space with a neutral background, try facing a window rather than having a window behind you
- Keep your phone upright (portrait not landscape) and directly in front of you (approximately 30 cm/12 inches away from your face), with your face in the frame. A green oval shape should appear around your face.
- Don’t let anything cover your face, like a mask, sunglasses, hats or even your hands and hair.

It’s simple, if you have a new phone follow these steps:
- Login to the app and select the settings icon in the bottom right corner
- Select ‘Security and access’ from the menu
- Next, follow the on-screen instructions to re-enrol for Selfie Check
