What is a Personal Investment Account?
A Personal Investment Account (PIA) is a proposed new way to invest in Ireland. You may also hear it described as a Savings and Investment Account (SIA).
The Government plans to introduce PIAs as a way for people to invest for longer-term goals through a single account.
PIAs are expected to launch during 2027. AIB will provide updates as further information becomes available after Budget 2027 on 6 October 2026.
AIB plans to offer a Personal Investment Account once the scheme rules have been finalised and the necessary services have been developed.
What do we know so far?
The Government plans to introduce legislation for PIAs in 2026.
Based on information available today:
PIAs are expected to launch during 2027.
They are intended to make investing easier to access.
Customers could hold investments in one account.
The final rules are expected to be announced in Budget 2027 on 6 October 2026.
Why is the Government introducing PIAs?
The Government wants to make investing easier so people can grow their money over the longer term.
The aim is to:
Help people build wealth over time
Make investing easier to understand
Improve financial wellbeing
Encourage long-term planning
Support economic growth
How could a PIA work?
A PIA is expected to provide a simple way to invest through one account.
The final details are still being developed. However, the Government has said the account should be easy to understand and easy to use.
Similar accounts in other countries allow people to make regular investments through a single account.
What are the benefits of a PIA?
A simple way to start investing
The proposed account is designed to make investing easier for more people.
It could help people who have never invested before taking their first step.
Potential tax benefits
The Government has confirmed that PIAs will have a tax-free threshold, with a low flat annual tax applying above that threshold. The exact threshold and tax rate will be announced as part of Budget 2027 on 6 October 2026.
Further information on recent announcements about Tax are below in the Questions and answers.
Long-term growth potential
Investments may grow more than cash savings over the long term.
However, returns are not guaranteed and the value of investments can fall.
One account to manage
The proposed account could allow customers to hold investments in one place, making them easier to manage.
Will AIB offer a personal investment account?
Yes.
We are preparing for the introduction of Personal Investment Accounts (PIAs) and will share further updates as more information becomes available.
