AIB Card Reader

The AIB Card Reader offers extended security which enables us to offer customers an extensive range of services through AIB Phone & Internet Banking.

The AIB Card Reader is a small hand held device which works in conjunction with the AIB Debit Card to generate unique security codes when you are completing certain transactions on AIB Phone & Internet Banking.

Different transactions will require different functions to be used on the AIB Card Reader. Our Internet Banking screens will provide a simple step by step guide to help you complete the required function.

Do I need an AIB Card Reader?

To complete the following services on AIB Phone & Internet Banking an AIB Card Reader will be required:

  • One off Transfers over €1,000.00
  • New International Payments (not available through AIB Phone Banking)
  • Set up / Amend a payee
  • Set up / Amend a Credit Card Bill *
  • Pay a new Credit Card bill
  • Set up a new Standing Order

When you select one of these services we will remind you that you need an AIB Card Reader to use the service.

How can I order an AIB Card Reader?

You can order your AIB Card Reader through the 'Manage My Accounts' section on AIB Internet Banking or by contacting one of our Customer Service Adviser Team at 0818 724 724 or +353 1 771 2424 from outside the Republic of Ireland.

The AIB Card Reader can be ordered at anytime through AIB Internet Banking when you select one of the services which require an AIB Card Reader. We will remind you that you need an AIB Card Reader to use the service and we will give you the option to order it there and then.

How will I receive my AIB Card Reader?

When you order your AIB Card Reader, it will be sent to you in the post and you should receive it within 3-4 business days.

Is there a charge for my AIB Card Reader?

There is no charge for your first AIB Card Reader.

All additional/replacement AIB Card Readers ordered will incur a fee of €5.50 which will be debited from the account that you nominate at the time of order.

My AIB Card Reader is not working what should I do?

If your AIB Card Reader is not working please make sure you have

  • Removed the plastic tab on the battery compartment
  • Inserted your AIB Debit Card correctly i.e. Chip facing downwards

Do I need batteries to use my AIB Card Reader?

Yes, your AIB Card Reader is operated using a battery. The Batteries are supplied with the device and should last for 3-5 years.

Batteries can be replaced by using a pen to unlock the battery compartment located at the bottom of your AIB Card Reader. Two CR2032 batteries are required.

I received my AIB Card Reader; what do I do now?

Before you use your AIB Card Reader for the first time you must nominate the AIB Debit Card that you wish to you use in conjunction with your AIB Phone & Internet Banking by following the steps below:

  • Log in to AIB Internet Banking
  • Select 'Manage My Accounts' from the menu on the left
  • Select the 'My Card Reader' tab from the top menu
  • Select the radio button 'Select the AIB Debit Card to use with your Card Reader' and click 'start'
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to activate the AIB Debit Card you wish to use

Will I need to continue using my AIB Code Card?

No, your Code Card will be automatically cancelled once you complete activation of your AIB Card Reader. Your Code Card should be destroyed safely.

You will be required to use your AIB Card Reader for all services which previously required a Code Card through AIB Phone & Internet Banking.

I have an AIB Code Card; can I keep using this if I don't order an AIB Card Reader?

Yes you can continue using your Code Card; however, some services will be moving to the AIB Card Reader and will no longer be available using a Code Card. If you change to the AIB Card Reader you will no longer require a Code Card as services which require a Code Card will now require an AIB Card Reader.

Will I need my AIB Card Reader to log in to AIB Phone & Internet Banking?

No. You will NEVER be asked to enter a code generated from your AIB Card Reader to log in to AIB Phone & Internet Banking nor will you be requested for codes from your AIB Card Reader for services on AIB Phone & Internet Banking, other than those listed above.

How do I use my AIB Card Reader?

Once you have nominated the AIB Debit Card you wish to use with your AIB Card Reader, you will be prompted to use your AIB Card Reader when completing any of the services outlined in the table above.

After inserting your AIB Debit Card into your AIB Card Reader, you will be requested to select a particular function on your AIB Card Reader. You will then be requested to enter your AIB Debit Card PIN into your AIB Card Reader.

The function requested will depend on the service which you are completing within AIB Phone & Internet Banking.

Simply follow the onscreen instructions for the particular service you are using to complete your transaction.

My AIB Card Reader has requested me to 'Enter PIN'; what is this?

This is the PIN associated with your nominated AIB Debit Card. This is the same PIN that you use at ATMs or when purchasing items using your AIB Debit Card.

If you enter the PIN incorrectly you will have 2 more attempts to enter the correct PIN.

If you cannot remember your PIN please contact +353 1 2695022 to order a reminder PIN.

Once you receive your reminder AIB Debit Card PIN or if you subsequently remember your PIN you can go to most AIB ATMs to 'unlock' it. Simply insert your card, select the 'PIN Service' options and follow the on-screen instructions.

Why does my AIB Card Reader display 'Wrong PIN' after I insert my AIB Debit Card?

Your AIB Card Reader displays the text 'Wrong PIN' after inserting your AIB Debit Card when the wrong AIB Debit Card PIN was entered the last time you attempted to use your AIB Card Reader.

The text 'Wrong PIN' will flash on the AIB Card Reader for a number of seconds before prompting you to enter your AIB Debit Card PIN. This is a reminder to you that the wrong PIN was previously entered and allows you to take care to enter the correct PIN so that you don't lock your AIB Card Reader for use with your AIB Phone & Internet Banking.

The text 'Wrong PIN Last Try' will appear on AIB Card Reader when you have one more attempt at entering your PIN before it is locked for use with your AIB Phone & Internet Banking.

How do I enter the payment amount on my AIB Card Reader?

You should enter the payment amount including decimals when requested on your AIB Card reader.

Please note if you are making a payment using Japanese Yen (JPY), you will need to enter the payment amount including the decimal place '.00' on your AIB Card Reader. For example: 100Yen will be entered to your AIB Card Reader as 100.00.

What happens if I enter the wrong code from my AIB Card Reader?

After three incorrect attempts your PIN will be locked and you will not be able to use your card with your PIN until your PIN is unlocked.

If you cannot remember your PIN please contact +353 1 2695022 to order a reminder PIN.

Once you receive your reminder AIB Debit Card PIN or if you subsequently remember your PIN you can go to most AIB ATMs to 'unlock' it. Simply insert your card, select the 'PIN Service' options and follow the on-screen instructions.

I have received a replacement AIB Debit Card; can I continue using this with my AIB Card Reader?

Yes. You can continue using this card with your AIB Card Reader. Your AIB Internet Banking screen will ask you to confirm you are using your new AIB Debit Card. Simply tick the box to confirm and complete the transaction using your new AIB Debit Card.

As this is a replacement card you can use your existing PIN.

My AIB Debit Card was lost/stolen, what should I do?

You should contact 1800 24 22 27 or +353 1 2695022 (from outside the Republic of Ireland) immediately to report your card lost or stolen. A new AIB Debit Card and PIN will be sent to you.

While you are waiting for your new card you will continue to have access to AIB Phone & Internet Banking, however any service which requires an AIB Card Reader will not be available until you activate your new AIB Debit Card for use with your AIB Phone & Internet Banking.

When you receive your new AIB Debit Card you will need to re-activate your AIB Card Reader though the 'Manage My Accounts' section on AIB Internet Banking or by contacting our Customer Service Adviser Team on 0818 724 724 or +353 1 771 2424 from outside the Republic of Ireland.

I have locked my AIB Debit Card PIN; can I still use My Card Reader?

No. If you lock your AIB Debit Card PIN please contact +353 1 2695022 to order a reminder PIN.

Once you receive your reminder AIB Debit Card PIN or if you subsequently remember your PIN you can go to most AIB ATMs to 'unlock' it. Simply insert your card, select the 'PIN Service' options and follow the on-screen instructions.

I have locked my AIB Debit Card PIN; can I still access AIB Phone & Internet Banking?

Yes, you will be able to access AIB Phone & Internet Banking but you will be unable to complete any transactions which require an AIB Card Reader. You will be able to

  • Access Account Balances and Transactions
  • Transfer money between your own accounts
  • Transfer money to existing payees and billers

I have an urgent payment to complete but I cannot find my AIB Card Reader, what should I do?

The AIB Card Reader device is not unique to each user and can be shared by customers. If you have an urgent payment or transaction which requires an AIB Card Reader you can borrow a family member's or friend's in order to complete your transaction using your own AIB Debit Card.

If you do not find your AIB Card Reader, you can order a subsequent device, either through the 'Manage My Accounts' section on AIB Internet Banking or by contacting a Customer Service Adviser at 0818 724 724 or +353 1 7712424 from outside the Republic of Ireland.

Can I use someone else's AIB Card Reader?

Yes. The AIB Card Reader is not unique to each user and can be shared with someone you trust. The AIB Card Reader uses the chip on your AIB Debit Card to generate codes unique to you.

The IBAN that I am making a payment to does not have 8 digits, what do I do?

If the IBAN that you are making a payment to does not have 8 numeric digits, you simply enter all numeric digits which appear in the IBAN.
