HISTORIC CONCLUSIONS TO THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
New champions in football....record-breakers in hurling. That’s the state of play on the senior club scene after St.Gall’s of Antrim and Ballyhale Shamrocks of Kilkenny won the AIB GAA All-Ireland Club Championship Finals in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day.
It brought the curtain down on a busy schedule which ran since last October and ended with over 34,000 people turning out for the senior finals in Croke Park. It was a special day for St.Gall’s who won the football title for the first time, beating Kilmurry-Ibrickane of Clare by 0-13 to 1-5.
In hurling, Ballyhale moved to the top of the honours’ list after dethroning Portumna (Galway) to win the Tommy Moore Cup for the fifth time. Henry Shefflin scored 0-8 for Ballyhale while Joe Canning scored 0-12 for Portumna. It ended a great season for Kilkenny clubs as St.Lachtain’s were crowned All-Ireland intermediate hurling champions last month.
CJ McGourty was St. Gall’s top scorer on 0-3 as the Antrim men won the Andy Merrigan Cup for the first time. They became the first club from the county to win the senior All-Ireland.
