Balancing risk and reward

However, you should be aware that, over the longer term, while investment funds that involve a higher degree of risk can produce higher returns, their performance can be volatile and past performance should not be regarded as a guide to future performance.

Investment funds carrying a lower degree of risk are more secure, but their returns are likely to be relatively modest ? and their value could be eroded by inflation. So, you need to establish the degree of investment risk that you are willing to accept ? so that you can select funds for a portfolio that are in line with your personal preferences.
