**A foreign cheque collection is where a cheque is sent directly by mail/courier to the foreign bank on a special presentation basis requesting irrevocable/final payment. Foreign currency cheques may be sent on a collection basis at the bank's discretion. There is no standard payment cycle, and your account will only be credited when AIB is in receipt of final payment from the foreign bank. The exchange rate used is the applicable rate on date of receipt of funds from the foreign bank, not the date the cheque is sent for collection. A charge of EUR15.24 applies per cheque sent on collection, which will be deducted by the branch on receipt of the funds. Foreign bank charges may also apply.
The most cost-effective means of receiving money from abroad is by receiving an International Payment instead of a draft or cheque; please refer to our Related Information section for more details. Due to the absence of a central European Clearing system, if you receive a cheque written in euro, which is drawn on a financial institution outside of the Republic of Ireland, it will be treated as an international cheque. Cheques written in euro, which are drawn on institutions here, should only be used in the Republic of Ireland. Your euro chequebook should not be used when making payments abroad, as they will take longer to process and may attract higher clearing charges. Government Stamp Duty of EUR0.50 applies to each cheque.
Terms and conditions apply.
